Year 11 Outdoor Education "Seatrek" expedition in Dampier
 |
Two Year 11 Outdoor Education classes recently completed a "Seatrek" expedition in Dampier. The aim of the Seatrek is for students to be self sufficient during 5 days of sailing.
Prior to the expedition boys had to learn numerous outcomes including; learning to sail, completing a small craft proficiency certificate (motor boating), first aid, navigation, reading the weather, minimal impact conservation, planning and packing and camp craft skills.
The expedition involved sailing in 15 foot sailing boats around the Dampier Archipelago, a series of more that 50 islands, with all our own equipment in order to survive and thrive.
Dampier is the ideal location as it is well protected from excessive wind and swell and provides a unique ecosystem in which we can observe all that is great about Australian wilderness. It also helps that the temperature averages 32 degrees in August.
While on expedition we camped on the islands and were able to go fishing and snorkelling. We observed manta rays, turtles, dolphins, sea eagles, ospreys and saw numerous schools of fish while snorkelling over colourful coral reefs. While the expedition can be physically and mentally draining it is a life learning experience and one that all boys remember after they leave school.
