In the Service of the Altar
The ministry of the altar server is to serve at the altar, assisting the priest at the direction of the acolyte. The particular duties of altar servers include the preparation of the altar and the vessels for Mass and the special duties of cross-bearer, censer bearer and candle-bearers. Altar servers also bear the bread, wine, water and the thurible.
Serving is not for everyone. You may want to do it but when you actually do you find you do not like it. As a Server you have a special ministry in the Church. It is your privilege to assist the priest at the Altar. This means that there is a certain way that is appropriate to behave. Remember that you are always part of the congregation even if you are sitting in a different place to them.
How to Become Involved
At Trinity any boy who regularly attends Mass in his own parish may seek permission to become an Altar Server. Application forms are available from Campus Ministry. Even if you are a regular Altar Server in your own parish you are expected to register with Campus Ministry, and have your name recorded in the Altar Servers register.
Training
Several times throughout the year training sessions will be conducted by the senior Servers. These sessions are for new applicants as well as renewal for regular servers .
