Year Eight Reading Program
The Reading Game
The Reading Game is one of the programs running for the Year 8's this year. The objective of this program is to introduce the Year 8's to a wide range of themes and encourage them to read from the wide selection of novels available in the library.
In the first lesson, the boys were introduced to eight themes - Fantasy, Science Fiction, War Stories, Relationship Stories, Humour, Horror Stories, Crime/Thriller Stories and Adventure Stories - and had an opportunity to peruse each theme. The boys had to identify books they would like to read by selecting the best blurb, best cover and best start in a novel. From this process, they then chose a novel they would like to read. As They borrow on a fortnightly basis and when they finish reading their books, they record the novel and choose another from a different theme.
Paper Bag Book Review
The Paper Bag Book Review is a term long program where boys will be expected to select a series of novels to read and choose one book to review. The review includes completing worksheets that relate to the novel, finding five objects representing significant events, characters and themes in the book and finally giving a booktalk where a paper bag and the objects are presented. |
