Year Nine Reading Program
Literature Circles
Literature Circles are small, temporary discussion groups comprised of students who have chosen to read the same story. Based on the information skills process, Literature Circles form around the choice of a text, and take participants through the process of group reading, discussion, transformation and presentation on that text. It is the group interaction which is the secret of the resounding success of Literature Circles.
The boys are responsible for reading the novel and to complete it prior to their presentation. They keep a record of their responses of the book in a reading diary which they bring to class and share ideas with their group.
The focus of the Literature Circles program is to allow the boys to discuss the novels and hear their peers opinions on their chosen books, rather than listen to teacher's rhetoric on the novels.
