When searching using the internet it is important to assess the worth of the website. The benefits of the internet are numerous but there is also many disadvantages. It is always important to use a variety of sources when researching. Keep in mind the following tips when accessing online information:
1. Technical and visual
Does the page take a long time to load?
Is the spelling correct?
Is it current? (Check for a date)
Are there any pictures or photographs? Do they add to the information?
2. Content
Does the information appear biased?
Does the information contradict something you found somewhere else?
Would it have been easier to get the information elsewhere?
Is the title of the page indicative of the content?
3. Authority
Who created the page? (Make sure you do not use a site created by students. They are not experts nor do they have the experience or knowlegde you require.)
What organisation is the person affiliated with?
Are you positive the information is valid and authoritative?
Are you satisfied the information is useful for your purpose?
