Pharisees= "separated ones", influential laymen; adhered to strict Sabbath rest, purity rituals, resurrection of the dead, tithing, & food restrictions, based on the Hebrew Scriptures and on later traditions

Scribes = "writers" men specially trained in writing,influential as interpreters, teachers of the Law, agents of the rulers. Could belong to other groups
