Judaism Then: Sadducees, Pharisees, Essenes, Priests, Scribes, Zealots
  • Essenes = sect a communal "monastic" lifestyle
  • Sadducees = "righteous ones", elite priest followers the laws of the Hebrew Bible (the Torah), but rejected newer traditions.
  • High Priest, Chief Priests, Priests, and Levites tribe of Levi responsible for the temple and its sacrifices, religious & social leaders of the Jewish people.
  • Pharisees= "separated ones", influential laymen; adhered to strict Sabbath rest, purity rituals, resurrection of the dead, tithing, & food restrictions, based on the Hebrew Scriptures and on later traditions
  • Zealots = militantly anti- Roman, pro-Torah, defenders of a pure Judaism
  • Scribes = "writers" men specially trained in writing,influential as interpreters, teachers of the Law, agents of the rulers. Could belong to other groups
