ASSESSMENT 1: AUSTRALIAN IDENTITY

TASK: Students to investigate how significant people and events in our past have contributed to the creation of an Australian identity and how our identity as a nation continues to be changed by our contact with the global community.

In your assignment you must research and answer the following:

1. Describe the traditional way of life of Aboriginal peoples before British colonisation and how their lifestyles were changed as a result.

This could be presented as a picture with an explanatory paragraph or written as an eyewitness account of an indigenous person whose life has been changed by colonisation.

2. Choose a person in History you believe has had a major impact upon Australian society and describe their achievements. Some suggestions would include people such as Caroline Chisholm, Dame Daisy Bates, Henry Parkes, Peter Lalor, Neville Bonner, Charles Perkins, and Eddie Mabo.

This could be presented as a series of diary entries or a speech honouring this particular individual. Remember do not simply give a life history, your focus is to be on how this person influenced Australian society and our identity.

3. Describe the influence that at least two of the following have had on current images of Australian identity and society:

Convicts Squatters Miners Bushrangers

4. Identify and describe the ways in which our national identity is being influenced in 2003. Discuss whether you believe Australia continues to have a unique national identity or are we becoming essentially part of the global economic community.

REMEMBER:

It is important that you comprehensively research this assignment. Class work and discussions will assist you. Ensure your work is neatly presented with a correctly structured bibliography.

AUSTRALIAN IMMIGRATION PATTERNS

TASK: Students to investigate how immigration has contributed to the Australian identity and assess the impact, both positive and negative, that immigration has had on Australian society.

This Assessment has 2 Parts: PART A: Using Source Document 1 plus your own research construct a timeline for a specific decade from the 20th century, which outlines the major dates, and events, which you feel, would have had an impact on Australian society. Your teacher will allocate this decade to you PART B: Using you I.T. skills you are to construct a Pictorial Essay to demonstrate the influence, both positive and negative, which various ethnic groups have had on Australian Society.

The purpose of a pictorial essay is to provide visuals with appropriate captions that reflect the changes to Australian society as a result of immigration. Pictorials could include photographs (perhaps even some from home), paintings, cartoons, advertisements, graphs, drawings and diagrams. The main emphasis is on the visual rather than providing large amounts of explanation.

REMEMBER: It is important that you comprehensively research this assignment. Class work and discussions will assist you. Ensure your work is neatly presented with a correctly structured bibliography.

You must write down where you found each photo, cartoon etc
