From the Headmaster

A PLACE TO CALL HOME

The release of the Australian Catholic Bishops’ Social Justice Statement each year is a significant event for people in this country. This year’s Statement to be released on 30 September calls on the Christian community and all Australians to stand in solidarity with those who find themselves homeless in our generally affluent society. The following excerpt was prepared by the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council:

The latest census figures show that more than 116,000 Australians are homeless – something unacceptable for a rich and well-resourced country like ours. (We are invited) to draw on the example of Pope Francis who has reached out to men and women on the streets of Rome and reminded us forcefully of the rights of people who are homeless around the world.

Homelessness is a challenge for all levels of society: for government, for Church and community, and for us as individuals. Each one of us can make a difference and, when we join with others, we can be a real force for change that ensures a home is made for everyone in our land.

At Trinity College, the boys are regularly challenged to consider exactly who constitutes those at the margins of our society. It is essential that they are educated to understand that the love and support of others, and the existence of a place to call home are fundamental requirements for the full development of an individual’s humanity. As a school community we echo the sentiments of the Bishops’ statement when we offer our own prayers for God’s blessing upon all those who are marginalised in our world through suffering homelessness.

TERM HOLIDAYS

At the conclusion of another very busy term I hope that all of the staff and students enjoy a well-deserved and revitalising break. I am aware that many families take the opportunity to travel during the school holidays and we wish each of them a safe and enjoyable time away from home. A reminder that school re-commences for all students in Years 711 on Tuesday, 9 October

PLASTIC BOTTLE RECYCLING

After the introduction of our four purple plastic PET#1 bins two weeks ago, the TCEC students did the first collection last Friday. The students were full of nervous anticipation as they opened the bins, hoping to find them not only full, but full of the correct plastic recyclable bottles. They were very happy to discover the bins were all fairly full and more importantly, with the correct contents! We encourage families to send their plastic bottles to school to be recycled, instead of recycling at home (which really just means going to landfill). A number of the TCEC students have solo projects at home to encourage family and neighbours to collect PET#1 plastic bottles for them. Do you have an idea to help collect more bottles?

Celebrating 125 Years

In 2019, Trinity College, formerly CBC Perth, will be celebrating our 125th anniversary. We are excited to share some of the highlights from the last 125 years.

In 1946, a 10 year old Herb Elliott became the talk of CBC after finishing in 3rd place during the College Half-Mile Handicap. Senior students claimed he only did so well because of the favourable handicap for his age group, until he won the following year. He won his final College Half-Mile in 1952, and he then transferred to Aquinas where he was able to participate and excel at the PSA level. He went on to be the youngest athlete to break the four-minute mile, and in the 1960 Rome Olympics he won a gold medal when he broke his own world record in the 1500m.
