Meet our teachers: Mr Damien Hansen

Mr Hansen teaches Physical Education and is the Outdoor Education Coordinator at the College. He just recently returned from the Dampier Camp with the Year 11 Outdoor Ed students. We asked Mr Hansen to share a little bit about himself with our community.

2020 has been a strange year. Have there been any highlights for you?

The Year 11 Dampier Camp at the end of Term 3 was a major highlight of this year.

Can you describe one of your favourite teaching moments at Trinity?

I have had a number of great moments whilst teaching at Trinity, but the best for me always come from camps. Being able to encourage students to challenge themselves and achieve something they never knew they could do is very rewarding.

Year 10 Camp is always a great example of this, in particular the abseiling component. Over the years, I have been able to encourage students who are afraid of heights to abseil down 37m next to me. Watching the joy on their face as they reach the bottom and achieve something they didn’t know they could do is always a special moment. This always makes me appreciate what I get to do as a career.

What inspired you to be a teacher?

I have a number of family members who are teachers and they have always inspired me to achieve my best. After leaving school I got involved in coaching many different sports at different schools across Perth. Teaching was a natural progression for me.

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be doing?

If I wasn’t teaching I would be farming in either the Midwest or Central Wheatbelt as I come from a farming background.
